Welcome everyone to this episode of our podcast! Today, we have a special guest, Ray Dalio, who is not just a macro investor but the founder of Bridgewater Associates, the largest hedge fund in the world. It's exciting to have you here, Ray! Your journey is truly inspiring. Can we kick things off by talking about how you started in investing and what inspired you to create Bridgewater?

g

Ray Dalio

Thanks, Leo! It's great to be here. My journey began in a modest setting, starting Bridgewater out of a two-bedroom apartment in New York City. I was passionate about economics and the markets, and that passion drove me to explore how various factors impact investing. I always believed in the importance of understanding the broader macroeconomic environment, which ultimately shaped the investment strategies we developed at Bridgewater.

Leo

That's such a relatable start. Many people think of hedge funds as these massive entities, but you really showed that it can start from almost anywhere! Speaking of strategies, you've introduced concepts like risk parity and the All Weather portfolio. Can you share a bit about what led you to these innovations and how they've changed the landscape for institutional investors?

g

Ray Dalio

Absolutely, Leo. The idea behind risk parity was to create a balanced approach to investing that could withstand various economic conditions. The All Weather portfolio, for instance, was designed to perform well in both inflationary and deflationary environments. My goal was to ensure that investors could achieve consistent returns regardless of market volatility. Over the years, this approach has influenced many institutions, encouraging them to rethink how they allocate assets.

h

Leo

That's fascinating! It really highlights the importance of adaptability in investing. As we look at today's global economic landscape, there are so many factors at play, from geopolitical tensions to advancing technologies. How do you think these elements will shape the future of investing?

g

Ray Dalio

Great question, Leo. The interconnectedness of global economies means that events in one part of the world can impact markets everywhere. We're seeing how technology is transforming industries, which adds another layer of complexity. I believe investors will need to be increasingly aware of these dynamics and develop a more holistic view of the markets. This involves not only understanding financial metrics but also the underlying socio-political factors.

h

Leo

That holistic approach is definitely crucial. In your books, you've discussed principles for dealing with the changing world order and navigating economic crises. Could you delve into some of those principles and how they can guide investors today?

g

Ray Dalio

Sure! One principle I emphasize is the importance of radical open-mindedness. In the rapidly changing environment we face, being open to different perspectives can lead to better decision-making. Another key principle is understanding the cycles—economic cycles, political cycles, and how they influence each other. Investors who grasp these cycles can better anticipate shifts and position themselves accordingly.

h

Leo

Radical open-mindedness is such a powerful concept. It’s amazing how often we see people sticking rigidly to their beliefs, especially in finance. Shifting gears a bit, can you share how your personal investment philosophy evolved over the years? Has there been a defining moment or lesson that significantly shaped your approach?

g

Ray Dalio

Definitely, Leo. My philosophy has been shaped by both successes and failures. One defining moment was during the 2008 financial crisis. It taught me the importance of being prepared for the unexpected. I realized that even the best models can fail, so it’s crucial to have a diversified strategy and to stress-test your assumptions. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of principles to guide decision-making.

h

Leo

It's incredible how those tough lessons can lead to deeper insights. As we look ahead, what trends or shifts do you foresee in the investment landscape over the next decade? Are there particular sectors or emerging markets that excite you?

g

Ray Dalio

The future will likely be shaped by technological advancements, climate change, and demographic shifts. I am particularly interested in sectors that embrace technology, such as renewable energy and artificial intelligence. Moreover, emerging markets continue to present unique opportunities as they develop. Investors who can adapt and recognize these trends early will be at an advantage.

h

Leo

Thank you for sharing your insights, Ray! It’s been a pleasure having you on the podcast. Your thoughts on the evolving investment landscape are not only enlightening but also inspire us to think critically about our own approaches. I look forward to continuing this conversation and exploring more of your work in the future!
