Welcome, everyone, to our podcast! I’m Sebastian Diaz, and I’m just back from an incredible experience at World Youth Day in Lisbon, Portugal. Today, I’m joined by Kelly-Ann O’Hara, and we’re going to talk about everything from the history of the event to the personal takeaways and the friends I made. So, Kelly-Ann, how about we start with the basics? What exactly is World Youth Day?

speaker2

Hi Sebastian, it’s great to have you here! World Youth Day is a global event that brings together young Catholics from all over the world. It’s a celebration of faith, but it’s also so much more. I’m really curious, what was the mission behind this event, and how did it start?

speaker1

Well, Kelly-Ann, World Youth Day was initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1984. The mission is to strengthen the faith of young people and to encourage them to live out their Christian values. It’s a time for young Catholics to come together, share their experiences, and feel a sense of community. The event includes Masses, concerts, and even pilgrimages. It’s like a giant family reunion, but for the global Catholic community.

speaker2

That’s amazing! I’ve heard it’s a really powerful experience. So, Sebastian, what was your journey to getting there? How did you decide to attend, and what were your thoughts leading up to the event?

speaker1

My journey to World Youth Day started a few months ago. I’ve always been involved in my local church, and I heard about the event from my youth group. The idea of meeting so many young people from different backgrounds and cultures, all united by their faith, was incredibly appealing. I was a bit nervous at first, thinking about the logistics and the sheer scale of it, but the more I learned, the more excited I became. I felt like it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to grow closer to my faith and to others.

speaker2

I can totally understand that mix of excitement and nerves. So, once you got there, what were some of the standout experiences you had? Were there any moments that really stuck with you?

speaker1

Oh, there were so many! One of the most memorable moments was the opening Mass. It was held in a huge stadium, and seeing thousands of young people, all dressed in their national colors, singing and praying together was just breathtaking. Another highlight was the night vigil, where we gathered in a park with candles and listened to testimonies from young people around the world. The sense of unity and the stories of faith and struggle were incredibly moving. And, of course, the concerts were a blast. There were performances by some amazing artists who used their talent to inspire and uplift. It was a perfect blend of spiritual and social activities.

speaker2

Wow, those sound like incredible moments! I’m curious, though, do you have to be deeply religious to attend World Youth Day? I mean, can someone who is just curious or exploring their faith also benefit from it?

speaker1

Absolutely, Kelly-Ann. World Youth Day is open to everyone, regardless of their religious background. While it’s primarily a Catholic event, the focus is on community, faith, and personal growth. Many people attend who are just curious or exploring their faith, and they often find it to be a profound and enriching experience. The event provides a safe space to ask questions, to learn, and to connect with others who are on a similar journey. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being open and willing to grow.

speaker2

That’s really reassuring. So, Sebastian, what were some of the key takeaways you got from attending? Did any particular session or talk stand out to you?

speaker1

One of the key takeaways for me was the importance of community. Being surrounded by so many young people who share similar values and challenges really reinforced the idea that we’re not alone in our faith journey. I attended a talk by a priest who spoke about the power of forgiveness, and how it can transform not just our relationships with others but also our relationship with God. It was a powerful reminder that forgiveness is a vital part of our spirituality. Another takeaway was the importance of service. There were many opportunities to volunteer and help others, and seeing the impact of small acts of kindness was truly inspiring.

speaker2

Those are such profound lessons. I’m also really interested in the friendships you formed. How did you connect with people, and are these friendships lasting?

speaker1

The friendships I made at World Youth Day are some of the most meaningful in my life. Whether it was through shared activities, like the night vigil, or just casual conversations in the youth hostel, there was a real sense of openness and authenticity. I met a young woman from Brazil who shared her story of overcoming addiction through her faith, and that really resonated with me. We’ve stayed in touch, and I even hope to visit her in Brazil someday. There’s something special about the connections you make when you’re all there for the same purpose. It’s like you’re part of a larger family.

speaker2

That’s beautiful. It sounds like these friendships have a deep impact. Speaking of impact, can you talk a bit about the self-accomplishment you felt? How did attending the event change you personally?

speaker1

Attending World Youth Day was a huge personal accomplishment for me. Just being able to travel to Portugal and participate in such a significant event was a goal I had set for myself. The experience deepened my faith and gave me a new perspective on my role in the community. I felt more confident in my beliefs and more motivated to live them out in my daily life. It’s like I found a new sense of purpose. I came back with a renewed commitment to my faith and to being a positive influence in my community.

speaker2

That’s so inspiring, Sebastian. I can imagine how empowering it must have been. Now, what about those who might criticize or oppose such an event? How would you respond to them?

speaker1

It’s a fair question, Kelly-Ann. I think one of the main criticisms is that it’s just a big party or that it’s too commercialized. But from my experience, it’s much more than that. It’s a place where young people can find support, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. The event is rooted in deep spiritual values and offers a platform for meaningful dialogue and reflection. For those who might oppose it, I would say, ‘Come and see for yourself.’ The impact on individuals and the community is truly positive and life-changing. It’s not just about the event itself; it’s about the lasting effects it has on people’s lives.

speaker2

I think that’s a really thoughtful response. It’s important to address criticisms openly and with understanding. So, Sebastian, any final thoughts or advice for someone considering attending World Youth Day in the future?

speaker1

My advice would be to go with an open heart and an open mind. Be ready to meet new people, to learn, and to grow. Don’t worry too much about the logistics; the organizers do a fantastic job making sure everything runs smoothly. And most importantly, take the time to reflect on your experiences. World Youth Day is more than just a few days of events; it’s a journey that can stay with you for a lifetime. I truly believe it’s an experience that can transform your life, just like it did mine.
