Welcome, everyone, to this incredible journey through the life and legacy of Su Shi, one of the most revered figures in Chinese literature. I'm 猫姐, and joining me today is the great poet himself, Su Shi. Su Shi, it's an honor to have you with us. How are you feeling today?

苏轼

Thank you, 猫姐. I am thrilled to be here and to share my story with your listeners. I’m feeling quite nostalgic, thinking about my journey through life and the many experiences that have shaped me.

猫姐

Let's start at the beginning. Su Shi, tell us about your early life and education. What was it like growing up in a family of scholars and how did that influence your path?

苏轼

Well, 猫姐, I was born into a family of scholars in Sichuan Province. My family placed a great emphasis on education and literature. My father, Su Xun, was a renowned scholar and my brother, Su Zhe, also became a prominent figure in literature and politics. We were all immersed in a world of books and poetry from a very young age. This environment fostered a deep love for learning and creativity in me. I began composing poetry and essays at a young age, which laid the foundation for my future career.

猫姐

That's fascinating. Can you share a specific memory from your childhood that really stands out and influenced your love for poetry and literature?

苏轼

Certainly. One of my fondest memories is of sitting with my father and brother under the moonlight, reciting poems and discussing philosophical ideas. There was a particular night when we were reading the works of Wang Wei, a famous Tang Dynasty poet. His ability to blend nature and human emotion in such a seamless way left a profound impact on me. It was that night that I realized the power of poetry to capture the essence of life and nature.

猫姐

That’s a beautiful memory, Su Shi. Moving on to your political career, you had a tumultuous journey with several exiles. How did these experiences shape your writing and perspective on life?

苏轼

My political career was indeed a rollercoaster. I held various positions in the imperial court and was often at odds with the ruling factions. These experiences, especially the exiles, were incredibly challenging but also deeply transformative. Being away from the political center allowed me to reflect on life and nature in a way that I never could have in the bustling court. My exile to Huangzhou, for instance, was a period of great introspection and creativity. It was there that I wrote some of my most famous works, including 'Red Cliff Rhapsody' and 'Ode to the Red Cliff.' These experiences taught me the value of resilience and the beauty of finding solace in nature.

猫姐

Your resilience is truly inspiring. Let’s talk about your literary contributions. What do you consider your most significant works, and how did they reflect your personal beliefs and experiences?

苏轼

One of my most significant works is 'Ode to the Red Cliff,' which I mentioned earlier. This piece is a reflection on the impermanence of life and the cyclical nature of nature. It draws on my experiences of exile and the beauty I found in the natural world. Another notable work is 'Tune: Water Melody,' a poem that explores themes of friendship and the impermanence of human relationships. These works, among others, reflect my belief in the interconnectedness of all things and the importance of finding balance and harmony in life.

猫姐

Your poetry is a testament to your deep philosophical insights. How did you balance your political ideals with your literary pursuits? Were there times when these two aspects of your life conflicted?

苏轼

Balancing my political ideals with my literary pursuits was indeed a constant challenge. In the court, I often found myself at odds with the prevailing political views, which led to my exiles. However, I believe that my literary work was a form of resistance and a way to express my ideals. My poetry and essays often critiqued the corruption and inefficiency of the government, which sometimes put me at risk. But I also saw my literary work as a way to inspire others and to leave a legacy that would outlast political turmoil.

猫姐

That’s a powerful perspective. Let’s delve into your personal life. You had a large family and were known for your close relationships. How did your family influence your writing and your approach to life?

苏轼

My family was a constant source of support and inspiration. My wife, Wang Fu, was a brilliant and supportive partner who encouraged my writing and often provided valuable feedback. My children also played a significant role in my life, and I often wrote poems and letters to them. One of my most touching poems, 'To My Son,' expresses my hopes and dreams for my children and the values I wanted to instill in them. My family was a refuge during times of political upheaval and a source of joy and comfort.

猫姐

Your family clearly played a vital role in your life. Now, let’s talk about the philosophical influences on your work. How did Buddhism and Taoism shape your poetry and worldview?

苏轼

Buddhism and Taoism were deeply influential in my life and work. Buddhism taught me about the impermanence of all things and the importance of detachment. This is evident in many of my poems, where I often reflect on the transient nature of life and the fleeting beauty of the world. Taoism, on the other hand, emphasized the harmony and balance of nature. I drew on Taoist principles to find a sense of peace and contentment, even in the face of adversity. These philosophies helped me to find a deeper connection with the natural world and to express my innermost thoughts and feelings through poetry.

猫姐

Your philosophical insights are truly profound. Let’s explore your travel and landscape poetry. How did your travels influence your writing, and what are some of your most memorable experiences on the road?

苏轼

Traveling was a significant part of my life, and it greatly enriched my poetry. Each place I visited offered new landscapes and new perspectives. For example, my time in Huangzhou allowed me to appreciate the beauty of the Yangtze River and the surrounding hills. I wrote several poems about the river, capturing its majestic flow and the sense of freedom it inspired in me. Another memorable experience was my journey to the Red Cliff, which inspired the 'Red Cliff Rhapsody.' The cliff’s rugged beauty and the history it held were a source of great inspiration. Traveling allowed me to see the world from different angles and to find new ways to express my thoughts and emotions.

猫姐

Your travels and the landscapes you encountered are beautifully captured in your poetry. How do you see your legacy and impact on Chinese literature today? What do you hope people take away from your works?

苏轼

I hope that my legacy serves as a reminder of the power of poetry to capture the human experience and the beauty of the natural world. My works are a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of finding balance and harmony in life. I also hope that my poetry and essays inspire people to think critically about the world around them and to strive for a more just and compassionate society. My legacy, I believe, lies in the timeless messages of my works and the enduring impact they have on readers.

猫姐

Your words are truly inspiring, Su Shi. To wrap up, can you share a favorite anecdote or a lesser-known fact about your life that you think our listeners would find fascinating?

苏轼

One lesser-known fact is that I was known for my love of food and cooking. I often experimented with new recipes and even wrote a treatise on cooking, 'The Record of Food.' One of my most famous dishes is Dongpo Pork, which is still enjoyed today. Cooking, like poetry, was a way for me to find joy and creativity in everyday life. It’s a reminder that even in the most challenging times, we can find moments of beauty and pleasure.

猫姐

That’s a delightful tidbit, Su Shi. Thank you so much for sharing your life and your wisdom with us today. It has been an absolute pleasure. For our listeners, we hope you’ve enjoyed this journey through the life and legacy of Su Shi. Stay tuned for more fascinating stories and insights on our podcast. Until next time, goodbye!
