Hi, I'm so excited to be here! Stoll Keenon Ogden has such a rich history. Can you tell us a bit about how it all began back in 1897?

speaker1

Absolutely! The story begins with Richard Stoll, who graduated from Yale University Law School in 1897 and was admitted to the Kentucky Bar. He started practicing law in Lexington and quickly established a reputation for his legal acumen. One of his earliest clients was the First National Bank and Trust Company of Lexington, which laid the foundation for the firm's future success. Stoll's appointment to the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees in 1898 further solidified his influence in the community.

speaker2

Wow, that's quite a start! Can you tell us more about the key figures who joined Stoll and helped build the firm into what it is today?

speaker1

Certainly! In 1930, four seasoned lawyers—Judge Stoll, Wallace Muir, William H. Townsend, and James Park—formed Stoll, Muir, Townsend & Park. This was a pivotal moment in the firm's history. Gayle Mohney, a star quarterback from the University of Kentucky who later became a renowned attorney, joined the firm in 1931. Mohney played a crucial role in the formation of the Keeneland Association, which is now the world's leading thoroughbred auction company. His contributions to the thoroughbred industry are still celebrated today.

That's amazing! What are some of the most notable cases and clients the firm has represented over the years?

speaker1

The firm has represented a wide array of high-profile clients and handled some groundbreaking cases. For example, in 1935, Judge Stoll and Mohney leveraged their representation of Lexington thoroughbred horse farms to help form the Keeneland Association. In 1948, the firm merged with Keenon, Huguelet, and Odear, and they began representing International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) in 1956. More recently, they've represented companies like Lexmark and Brown-Forman Corporation, one of the largest American-owned companies in the spirits and wine business.

speaker2

Those are some impressive clients! How has the firm stayed at the forefront of legal innovation over the years?

In 1974, they moved to the new First Security National Bank & Trust Company building, which provided them with state-of-the-art facilities. In 1991, they began representing Lexmark, which was formed by a sale of IBM’s office products division. The firm also opened offices in Louisville and Henderson, Kentucky, and Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, to better serve their growing client base. They have consistently adapted to new technologies and legal challenges, ensuring they remain a leader in the industry.

Additionally, the firm has been recognized as 'Kentucky Firm of the Year' by Benchmark Litigation, and they have members serving in leadership roles in organizations like the Kentucky Bar Association and the American Bar Association.

speaker2

That's fantastic! How has the firm's leadership evolved over the years to keep it at the top of its game?

speaker1

Leadership has been a key factor in the firm's success. In 1985, William M. Lear Jr. was appointed as the firm’s first Managing Partner, and he organized the practice through a committee system. William L. Montague served as Managing Partner from 1990 to 1995, and Bill Lear was re-elected to this role after serving in the Kentucky General Assembly. In 2016, P. Douglas Barr was elected as Managing Director, and Bill Lear continued as Chairman Emeritus. The firm has always placed a strong emphasis on leadership development and fostering a collaborative environment.

The firm has been proactive in addressing modern challenges. For example, they have expanded their practice areas to include energy law, real estate, and business law. They've also embraced technology, using advanced tools and platforms to enhance their services. In 2022, they merged with Katz Korin Cunningham, an Indianapolis-based firm, and acquired Applegate Fifer Pulliam, a boutique firm specializing in real estate and business law.
