Today, we are honored to have with us Daniel Johnson, a veteran of the USS Arizona during the infamous Pearl Harbor attack. Daniel, your story is not only vital to our history but also a powerful testament to the human spirit. Welcome.

c

Daniel Johnson

Thank you, Leo. It's a privilege to share my experiences and reflect on that day. It's something that stays with me always.

Can you take us back to that day, December 7, 1941? What do you remember most vividly?

c

Daniel Johnson

The stillness of the morning was unsettling. I will never forget the sound of the planes approaching, breaking that calm. The chaos that followed was surreal. I remember feeling an overwhelming mix of fear and determination.

i

Leo

In the face of such chaos, how were you able to focus on helping your fellow servicemen?

c

Daniel Johnson

Instinct took over. I had to help those around me; there was no time to think about my own fear. Seeing the young men around me, terrified and injured, pushed me to act.

i

Leo

You mentioned the young man who clung to your arm. Can you tell us more about that moment and what it meant to you?

c

Daniel Johnson

That young man, barely 19, was a reminder of the innocence we all had. It was heartbreaking to see him in pain, but it also fueled my resolve to protect him and others.

i

Leo

Reflecting on that day, what lessons do you carry with you now?

c

Daniel Johnson

The fragility of life is a lesson that echoes profoundly. War teaches us, often harshly, about the cost of conflict and the importance of cherishing every moment.

i

Leo

How do you honor the memory of those you served with who did not make it?

c

Daniel Johnson

I share their stories, like I'm doing now. Each time I speak, I feel I give them a voice. I also participate in memorial events to ensure they are never forgotten.

i

Leo

It sounds like your experiences have shaped your views on conflict today. What message do you have for younger generations?

c

Daniel Johnson

Understand history. Learn from it. The resilience of the human spirit can overcome any conflict, but we must strive for peace before we face devastation.

i
