To start, could you tell us about the inspiration behind creating Anlin? What drew you to the idea of a small logging town with such deep, dark secrets?

Bai Feng

The idea for Anlin came from a fascination with the contrast between the idyllic and the macabre. I was inspired by the rich folklore and ancient beliefs of Kodeshia, particularly the stories that highlight the duality of human nature. The small town setting allowed me to explore these themes in a microcosm, where the secrets and sins of the past are deeply intertwined with the present.

That's fascinating. The atmosphere of Anlin is so immersive. Could you share more about how you created the setting and the visual style of the series? How did the real locations in the Huangshan mountain forests influence the show?

Bai Feng

The setting was crucial to the series. The thick forests and misty highlands of the Huangshan mountains provided a perfect backdrop for the eerie and mysterious tone we wanted to achieve. We used tight framing and low-key lighting to heighten the suspense and create a sense of claustrophobia. The natural beauty of the location also served to underscore the contrast between the town's outward peace and its hidden darkness.

Speaking of the town, the characters of Anlin are incredibly complex and well-developed. How did you approach the character development, especially for Agent Zhao Wei, the main protagonist?

Bai Feng

Agent Zhao Wei was designed to be a determined and haunted investigator, someone who is both a stranger in a strange land and a relentless truth-seeker. I wanted her to embody the struggle between the modern and the ancient, the rational and the supernatural. Her character evolves throughout the series as she uncovers more about the town and herself. The supporting cast, each with their own secrets and motives, further enriches the narrative and adds layers of complexity.

The series is known for its blend of mystery, horror, and supernatural elements. How did you balance these different genres to create a cohesive and compelling story?

Bai Feng

Balancing the genres was a deliberate choice to create a unique viewing experience. The mystery and crime elements provide the procedural framework, while the horror and supernatural elements add depth and atmosphere. We aimed to keep the audience on the edge of their seats, never quite sure what was real and what was part of a larger, more sinister reality. This ambiguity was key to maintaining the tension and intrigue throughout the series.

Anlin received critical acclaim and developed a devoted cult following. What do you think contributed to its success and enduring popularity?

Bai Feng

I believe the combination of a strong, atmospheric setting, complex characters, and a unique blend of genres played a significant role in Anlin's success. The show also touched on universal themes of corruption, secrecy, and the search for truth, which resonated with audiences. The critical acclaim and word-of-mouth support helped it grow from a niche series to a beloved cult classic.

Anlin is a story about the struggle between light and darkness, and the resilience of those who dare to uncover the hidden. As for the future, I'm always open to revisiting the Anlin universe if the right opportunity presents itself. There are still many untold stories and unexplored corners of that town.
