Welcome, Jake! It's so great to have you here today. You have an inspiring story that many can relate to, especially when it comes to the transition from high school to college.

c

Jake Thompson

Thanks for having me, Emily! I’m excited to share my journey. It was definitely a rollercoaster ride.

i

Emily Carter

You mentioned that you came to college excited and ready to tackle both football and medicine. Can you tell us more about those early days and what you experienced?

c

Jake Thompson

Absolutely! When I first stepped on campus, I felt such a mix of excitement and nervousness. I thought I had everything figured out, but reality set in pretty quickly. I got homesick, which was tough because I’m very close to my family. The pressure of midterms really hit me hard, and I struggled to connect with others.

i

Emily Carter

That sounds really challenging. How did your homesickness affect your mental health and your ability to perform both academically and athletically?

c

Jake Thompson

It was tough. I felt incredibly isolated, especially when I couldn't connect with my classmates or teammates. The loneliness compounded everything, and when I got my concussion, it felt like I hit rock bottom. I couldn’t play, couldn’t study, and just felt completely lost.

i

Emily Carter

Concussions can be serious. How did your recovery process affect your outlook on both sports and your studies?

c

Jake Thompson

It was a turning point for me. I had to take a step back and really reflect on what was important. I realized that my health and well-being had to come first. It helped me understand the importance of support systems. During my recovery, I found ways to connect with my teammates and friends, which made a huge difference.

i

Emily Carter

That’s a great perspective. Now that you are balancing both football and studies, how do you manage your time and maintain your mental health?

c

Jake Thompson

Time management is crucial! I prioritize my schedule and ensure I set aside time for self-care. I also reach out to my support system whenever I feel overwhelmed. It’s important to have that balance, and I’ve learned to be more open about how I’m feeling.

i

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations after completing your degree? Do you see yourself continuing in sports or focusing solely on medicine?

c

Jake Thompson

That’s a tough question! I’ve always dreamed of playing professionally, but I’m also passionate about becoming a doctor. Ideally, I’d love to find a way to combine both. Whether that’s through sports medicine or something else, I want to make an impact on others’ lives.
